THE BRILLIANT AND HUGELY INFLUENTIAL BOOK BY THE WINNER OF THE 2017 ROYAL SOCIETY INSIGHT INVESTMENT SCIENCE BOOKS PRIZE
‘Fun, droll yet deeply serious.’
New Scientist
‘A brilliant feminist critic of the
neurosciences … Read her, enjoy and learn.’
Hilary Rose, THES
‘A witty and meticulously researched
exposé of the sloppy studies that pass for scientific
evidence in so many of today’s bestselling books
on sex differences.’
Carol Tavris, TLS
Gender inequalities are increasingly defended by citing hard-wired differences between the male and
female brain. That’s why, we’re told, there are so few
women in science, so few men in the laundry room –
different brains are just suited to different things.
With sparkling wit and humour, Cordelia Fine attacks
this ‘neurosexism’, revealing the mind’s remarkable
plasticity, the substantial influence of culture on identity,
and the malleability of what we consider to be
‘hardwired’ difference.
This modern classic shows
the surprising extent to which boys and girls, men and
women are made – not born.
Delusions of Gender The Real Science Behind Sex Differences eBook Cordelia Fine
Fascinating book giving the back story and the flaws of a lot of research billed as showing the "definitive" differences between male and female brains. Fine is also a very entertaining writer - there are laugh-out-loud bits in the book.Product details

Delusions of Gender The Real Science Behind Sex Differences eBook Cordelia Fine Reviews
This book was a total eye-opener. Even as someone approaching the work through a feminist lens, I learned so many new things, and was so gratified to see that someone had done the hard work to dissect what many of us already suspected that science can be flawed & is largely open to interpretation. Rather than proposing new research, the author sifts through hundreds of studies on gender and gender differences, breaking them down, analyzing them, and ultimately evaluating their scientific soundness. She proposes alternative theories for why certain results might have been achieved, and exposes flaws and gaps in the methodologies and reasoning behind countless other studies. Alongside considerations of neuroscience, the author emphasizes the importance and impact that society has on gender, which I found particularly heartening, as this is something we can work to change. It was fantastic to have old 'gender myths' debunked, and even better to have it done in the witty and playful tone that the author adopts. I couldn't recommend this book more, and if I had my way, I'd have it as compulsory reading for everyone.
I love this book. Its helping to unscramble my brain and validate my feelings and experiences after years of wondering why everything around me felt wrong, intolerable and unfair. There I was thinking I was "just too sensitive".
This should be required reading for teachers and politicians. It debunks many neuroscientific myths about the supposed hardwired differences between men and women. It points out socializing forces shape the sexes more than anything. With rigorous scientific throuroughness, the author uses examples from numerous studies to back up her views while showing the flaws in many experiments that supposedly prove gender differences in the brain structure. An intelligent, balanced, fascinating look at gender and gender research. It is highly readable, nevet getting bogged down with technical terms.
An excellent overview on the questions related to gender studies and neuroscience. I have used this as source material for a regular gender studies event at my workplace. It is very easy to understand, has a really thorough approach to all the topics, and has a comprehensive overview of the related sources.
At times, the book does come off as repetitive, but I think the reason they do that is because they're really trying to drive the point home. We like to think that sexism is over because of the laws we managed to pass, but legislation can only do so much. There is still sexism in our society and we have to continue fighting the battle. Thank you, Cordelia, for writing this book!
Excellent read with great examples to prove the points being made
Fascinating look at our gendered world. I found it especially interesting to learn how the foregone conclusion of female inferiority/male superiority is baked into tests that have purported to be objective, but of course are not. Pretty sad to read how, over thousands of years, this one thing remains constant men as a group seem to truly need to prove themselves better than women. The author has made a quite thorough study of this subject, debunking the Male Variability Theory [it's false], likewise disproving various and sundry evolutionary psychology nonsense such as men and women being "hardwired" to think/feel/do/act opposite each other. The rational reader, after absorbing this clearly written and engrossing book, will have learned quite a bit on the subject. Glad I read it.
Fascinating book giving the back story and the flaws of a lot of research billed as showing the "definitive" differences between male and female brains. Fine is also a very entertaining writer - there are laugh-out-loud bits in the book.
